Matt Czuchry talks Gilmore Girls - Exclusive Interview

After talking with Matt Czuchry about his work on I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, we chatted about his other work, about Gilmore Girls, and went through a quick round of get-to-know-you questions.

Matt Czuchry mentioned his upcoming USO Tour with the Hollywood Knights, but of course we all want to know what other projects Matt may be working on.

"I have no work map yet," says Matt. "There are two parts to consider: before the movie comes out and after it comes out." Matt says he’s not sure what projects he’ll work on.

When asked what kinds of characters he’d like to play, Matt says it’s hard to think about other roles while immersed in I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. That said, Matt notes that "I like to seek different projects. From theater to guest arcs on shows I love like Friday Night Lights."

When asked if he’d be back for this season of Friday Night Lights, Matt says no. He says that a lot will make sense to viewers of Friday Night Lights when the season resumes, in terms of why his character is no longer a part of the show.

For those of you familiar with Matt Czuchry’s work, you’ll know he signed on for the pilot of a new show called Gravity. I asked Matt about the status of this project and, despite rumors to the contrary, Matt says "The pilot was never shot." Matt says he was attached to the project to shoot the pilot, but it never made it to that stage. He’s no longer attached to the project. If the pilot were to go forward now, it would be a whole new series of negotiations.

When asked if he was happy with the ending of Gilmore Girls, Matt Czuchry says, "You know, it was hard, creatively. We didn’t know if it was going to be a season finale or a series finale. I think that affected the show. The storylines had an ‘in between’ feeling’. There wasn’t as much closure."

I asked Matt what kind of future he saw for Logan & Rory. Matt says, "It’s hard to say, since the show ended the way it ended. I think Logan was positively changed by her [Rory] and wanted more, but she was not ready for more. It’s hard to say what would have happened."

Did Matt enjoy working on Gilmore Girls? "Yes, of course. I was there three years. It’s a big part of who I am now."

As to whether or not Matt keeps in touch with other Gilmore Girls cast & crew, he says that there are some he keeps in touch with, but others he watches from a distance. "I follow most from a distance. Like Alexis & Lauren, I like to follow what they’re up to."

And the question we all want to know: would Matt come back if Gilmore Girls were to renew or pursue a movie?

"I haven’t heard anything about a movie. If it’s happening, I haven’t been contacted by anyone official," says Matt.

Quick Questions with Matt Czuchry:

  • What’s your favorite book?
"Uh… that’s a hard one. I’d have to say Blindness."
  • Where’s your favorite place to travel to?
    "Charleston, South Carolina"
  • What was your worst trip ever?
"Hmm… Charleston, South Carolina. [laughs] No, hmm… I don’t think anything stands out for me as a terrible trip."
  • Do you have any pet peeves?
"Yeah, I don’t really like the sounds of alarms or phones ringing."
  • Where do you want to be in 5 years?
"I want to be in a place in my career where I’m doing projects I’m passionate about, and have the opportunity to do projects I’m passionate about."

A note to young readers: I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is an R-rated movie and materials on the public movie blog & Tucker Max’s website are not meant for younger viewers. I have summarized the Matt Czuchry elements here on this site so that you can keep up with Matt’s work in a safe environment.

Matt Czuchry talks IHTSBIH - Exclusive Interview

A note to young readers: I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is an R-rated movie and materials on the public movie blog & Tucker Max’s website are not meant for younger viewers. I have summarized the Matt Czuchry elements here on this site so that you don’t need to click to those websites.

On Friday, as I sat on a ferry going to Salt Spring Island, I had the opportunity to do a phone interview with Matt Czuchry, who is currently in Shreveport, Louisiana filming I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. They began filming the movie, based on Tucker Max’s life andbest-selling novel of the same name, earlier this summer and have a week left on set. Matt says he’s enjoyed working on the film and a couple moments from the film have made their way into his list of the "Top 5 Weirdest Experiences" of his life.

In the movie of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, Matt Czuchry plays Tucker Max in an adaptation of the "Austin Road Trip" story. The film loosely follows the short story about Tucker Max’s trip to a friend’s bachelor party. On that trip, Tucker Max gets the groom into trouble then abandons him to pursue his own carnal pleasures. After getting banned from the wedding, Max must attempt to get back into his friend’s favor.

Although both Tucker and Matt had written about how he had come to be cast in the film, many of you wanted more details. Matt says he had not read the book prior to receiving Tucker Max’s screenplay, but has since gone back to read it. Matt describes the movie as following one of the short stories of the book, though structured differently with narrative written around it.

Matt described in a recent blog post that "The movies that I tend to connect with have something in common: They come from real experiences and are colored by the lives of real people." In follow up, I asked what about this story and Tucker Max attracted him to the film. Matt Czuchry says, "Tucker has this energy and a love for living in the moment. He has a rawness and authenticity about him."

Matt says it was this "energy and passion" that attracted him to the movie. Because he and Tucker Max are so different, Matt says that "just knowing what it would take to do this role" was a challenge he was eager for.

Matt says that he and Tucker share that love of the moment; that Tucker "live[s] life in a way that’s honest," which is something Matt himself tries to do. Although Matt shares this characteristic with Tucker Max, the two are very different. When it comes to comparing himself to the scripted Tucker Max, the character he plays in the movie, Matt says "We’re quite a bit different. How we are with friends, with women, how we treat others…"

Questions for Matt Czuchry?

As you know from previous posts on GilmoreGirlsNews.com, Matt Czuchry is currently in Shreveport filming a new movie, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, a movie based on the true-to-life story of Tucker Max. Matt Czuchry is acting out the lead role as Tucker Max in the film - and, as Tucker notes, could not be more different from himself in real life:

"In real life, he could not be less like me–where I am a narcissist, he is incredibly empathetic. Where I am outgoing and boisterous, he is shy and reserved. Where I am aggressive and physical, he is calm and reasoned."

I have the opportunity to do a short phone interview with Matt Czuchry this Friday. The interview will primarily be about his work on this film. This site is, as always, about the great community here. So, with that said, do you have any questions for Matt? If so, leave them in the comments and I’ll try to include them!

I will also be conducting an interview with Tucker Max, so if you have questions for him too, let me know.

“Pretty Ugly People” Trailer

A new trailer for Melissa McCarthy’s new movie, Pretty Ugly People, has come out. As noted previously, Pretty Ugly People is about six estranged college friends who are brought together by a "dying" woman’s wish. In fact, Lucy (Missi Pyle) is not dying, she’s had gastric-bypass surgery and tricks her friends to come on a trip to a retreat in Montana so the "thin" Lucy can finally feel a part of the group. She learns that life on the other side of obesity is not as green as she once thought.

Lucy had assumed her group of thin friends led idyllic lives, but when she takes them on a rugged 4-day hiking trip she learns their lives are just as conflicted and confused as hers was. Lucy’s hike morphs into a trip that will force everyone to look at their own issues, to re-examine friendships, and to learn self-acceptance.

Melissa McCarthy plays Becky in the film, a "former slut turned scrapbooking-addicted homemaker." The film also stars Allison Janney, Josh Hopkins, Larry Sullivan, Phill Lewis and more. Here’s the trailer:

Writer-director Tate Taylor was inspired to tell this story based on a friend who was undergoing gastric-bypass with the aim to "finally be like all of you guys." Tate notes,

"She really thought her obesity was the only horrible thing facing her in the world and if she got rid of that she’d be fine. It just stuck with me. I wanted to talk about how we all have our baggage, whatever that may be, and how we have to work it out.”

Pretty Ugly People is making the rounds to a growing list of film festivals. Check out the full list here.

Check out more publicity stills from Pretty Ugly People after the jump…
